Custom ClosetMaid Shelves

Picture
Here is a side by side comparison before and after installing the shelves.

Picture
First step was to buy the shelving.

One 12" wide shelf and one 16" wide shelf was enough for the full closet.

I bought three (six brackets total) of the ClosetMaid shelf support kits. These were the smallest brackets which I could locate. These brackets already had holes in the top which could serve as anchor points with zip ties.

The next step was to cut the shelves to the correct width:

One 12" shelf 18-5/16" wide
Two 16" shelves 18 5/16" wide

Picture
I used a Dremel with a Dremel EZ Lock Metal Cut-Off Rotary Wheel For Metal. I didn't own any equipment to cut metal so this was the least expensive option I could find. I then used a metal file to clean the rough edges and melted rubber from the cuts.

Picture
I removed 2" wide and 3" deep from the left front of one 16" shelf. This would be the middle shelf which has to fit around the plastic shroud which covers the back of the thermostat and light switches in the bathroom wall.

I removed 4" from the left front lip on one 16" wide shelf. This would be the bottom shelf which would rest on the wood box on the left side of the closet.

Picture
I installed the bottom 16" shelf first since it rests on the wood provision on the left. I used a level on the floor to make sure the trailer was completely level. I then used the level on the shelf to determine where to screw the bracket in on the right side.

Picture
The next step was to install the second 16" shelf, 14.5" up from the bottom shelf. I used zip ties on each shelf to secure the shelves and prevent them from moving while in transit.

Picture
The last step was to install the 12" shelf, 14.5" above the middle shelf and cut off the excess from the zip-ties for a clean look.

Here is a photo of one of the shelves filled with six eBags. I ordered my 3-pack eBags on Amazon. It came with one small, one medium and one large bag. I ordered two sets for a total of six bags. My wife also ordered six bags and these were more than enough for two weeks on the road. I even use the bags to help organize my clothes when packing my suitcase.
